‘Why don’t you just get your shit together?’ I tried. But I couldn’t. Working in health care a few years back I got burned out. Switching to programming was what saved me, but with newfound passion I soon found myself in familiar patterns and realized I was walking a fine line between burning passion and getting burned out again. I started hearing stories, stories that needed to be shared. How do we get burned out, what can we do to prevent or treat? I made it my mission to find out- desperate not to end up in the same situation again. 

After interviewing developers currently burned out or rehabilitated, doctors and phycologists, I had collected a lot of information about the science of the condition some claim is fake, and others find too real. Where does passion come in in all of this, and how can it save us, and sometimes get us into trouble? How does self-doubt syndromes, psychosomatic symptoms and sleep debt and deprivation contribute or play a role? Those were just a few out of many questions I had. 

A session with personal stories wrapped in what science has to tell us today, with the purpose to create awareness, provide inspiration, and most important, practical advice on staying passionate and avoid being burned out.

The case study presented is based on the integration between SharePoint and Yammer as a unified platform for social networking in the business. The trigger is to extend SharePoint’s collaborative capabilities by leveraging the social connections that Yammer offers among people geographically distributed within a global organisation.
The objective is in building a single entry point inside a company’s intranet and extending the typical and old-fashioned BI dashboard towards a more modern and collaborative social discovery experience based on a project team. Information, basically, is no longer stored and centralised, but it is available on demand according to specific team and project’s needs.
In addition, during this session, best practises will be presented for modelling business processes completely visually, without coding, and for interacting with SharePoint applications from a traditional computer as well as a mobile device.

Horizontal scalability is the new default, but creating distributed systems can be tricky. Orleans is a Virtual Actor model framework from Microsoft which allows developers to create distributed systems in a very simple manner.

Orleans differentiates itself from other Actor model frameworks by the way it manages lifecycles of actors (called Grains). Orleans abstracts away machines and the network to deliver a fault-tolerant, &quot;distributed by default&quot; system with minimal boilerplate.

In this session, we will explore the the Actor model, the Virtual Actor model, and the basics of writing distributed systems for Azure using Orleans.

Kinect for Windows offers an engaging and interactive approach to learning that completes the experience of teachers and students using Office 365 for Education.
By showcasing the principles of developing applications for Kinect, and specifically integrating the Kinect experience with Office 365 for Education, this session will describe how to introduce gesture-based interactions and voice recognition as part of a class program in a school. This real case study, accompanied by plenty of code and examples, focuses on creating a quiz engine for Office 365 for Education, which uses the Kinect sensor for “gamifying” the test session in a class, by recognizing specific gesture and voice for identifying the correct answer.
The engine is built with expandability in mind, allowing teachers to create bespoke quizzes with no coding. And to go even further, a “Quiz SDK” exists for developers for developing custom extensions to the quiz engine.
Let’s put it all together for an exciting learning experience: a web-based learning platform based on Office 365 for Education, Kinect for Windows for interacting with students and make learning fun, and an extensible quiz engine for developing interactive tests that recognize gesture and voice.

Kinecting with your class: An interactive learning experience for Office 365

One of the greatest features of smart phone apps have been GPS and WiFi location detection.  Developers have been able to tailor their user experience and reduce the amount of input required by users by detecting where the user is. However these location detection techniques give an accuracy to ~10 metres,  and break down when the user moves indoors. 

Bluetooth Low Energy beacons (branded by Apple as 'iBeacons') give developers a way to solve this, by placing beacons in an environment applications can detect their location to a much higher accuracy than previously possible. This opens up a huge opportunity for a new wave of mobile apps use physical proximity to create great user experiences.

This session will introduce iBeacons and the API's for iOS and Android, outlining current challenges and opportunities and demonstrate various types of beacons in action.

PhoneGap Fundamentals

When writing code, unit tests, continuous integration, automated deploys and version control are all part and parcel - someone without these is 'behind the times'. But what do you do with your database behind your web application? Good chance it's still quite manual for you/your company. 

SSDT is a MS technology which allows you to treat your database just the same as anything that goes on a Production server (allowing version control/history of changes and (gasp!) seeing it’s schema at a certain point in time), add unit tests,  enforce development standards, manage your reference data/lookup tables and even automatically generating delta change scripts and deploy them somewhere. 

Complete with plenty of demos, let's talk a walk through looking at an (mock) existing database, how you might go through putting it into SSDT, setting it up to deploy that database anywhere you want - from your development server, back to production, and work it all into a Continuous Integration environment – complete with red and green traffic lights so you know when something is broken. 

No tricks up the sleeve, this is what we use day in and day out to manage 1MB to multi-terabyte databases in Production, complete with a few neat tips and tricks we’ve learnt along the way. I have no investment in this technology or MS, I just plain think it's cool!

We will cover the discussions and decisions made by the team around the concepts of versioning, authentication, authorization, caching, hypermedia and all other things REST, within the context of the ASP.NET WebAPI, and why we decided to not to always follow the rules/expectations; feel free to disagree with us during the talk.

However having an API is not always enough you also need consumers and you need to engage and support them if you want your efforts to be successful and therefore we will also discuss our approach to get internal and external developers on-board and helping them to also be successful.

Let's set the scene, it's 2020 and finally we have ES6 in all JavaScript engines, we can finally use some of those features that were so exciting back in 2014.

But what were these features? And what problems can they now finally solve?

But then we'll back up a little, back to 2014 and some of these features are already making their way into JavaScript engines, so what can we use today and how can we ensure we're not going to shoot ourselves in the foot when someone opens it in iOS Safari?

The event sourcing architectural style is based on recording the system state as a series of events that describe what has happened. This gives us significantly more data about business processes than traditional approaches that store only the current state of the system. It also allows significant flexibility in how we can change how we model the system as requirements change and our understanding increases as well as a complete audit log of all business events.

Building in the cloud effectively requires tailoring your systems to the nature of the platform if you want to avoid scalability and cost issues. I'll discuss the nature of our event sourcing system and how we have designed it to fit with the capabilities Azure provides as well as the tradeoffs we have accepted in doing so.

In doing so I'll touch on the scalability, upgrade and disaster recovery capabilities that we have developed to work with our solution. I'll also throw in some additional buzzwords like CQRS and Eventual Consistency.

It is very common to see applications where the data and the logic are split into different objects. This is usually called “Anemic Domain Model”. Domain-Driven Design (DDD) helps you avoid that by providing a way to design complex applications which focus on writing code that is aligned with your domain.
In this session Jorge will explain how DDD works and will provide an overview of the strategic and tactical patterns. He will also discuss some of the common mistakes most developers make when implementing DDD.

In this talk, we'll briefly look at why it's important to automate your entire deployment process as soon as possible. We'll then look at some of the ways teams try to manage their deployments and reduce the danger. Finally, I'll show you why Octopus Deploy is the best way to do it. We'll look at some real-world Octopus implementations, including very complex environments, in-depth testing, and automated rollbacks.

For some years, there has been a quiet renaissance in a form of software development once relegated to niche fields of academia and computer science: functional programming.
